THE GIRL WHO SILENCED THE WORLD FOR FIVE MINUTES

Severn Suzuki was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. While attending Lord Tennyson Elementary School in French Immersion, at the age of nine, she founded the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a group of children dedicated to learning and teaching other youngsters about environmental issues. In 1992, at the age of 12, Suzuki raised money with members of ECO, to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Along with group members Michelle Quigg, Vanessa Suttie, and Morgan Geisler, Cullis-Suzuki presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, where she was applauded for a speech to the delegates. In 1993, she was honoured in the United Nations Environment Programme's Global 500 Roll of Honour. In 1993, Doubleday published her book Tell the World, a 32-page book of environmental steps for families.

The following video has been broadcasted world-wide only thanks to the Internet. Click on the following link to listen to the wise words of the girl who silenced the world for five minutes. Then answer the following questions and give your opinion about Severn's speech in a single paragraph.

She was right, we, people in the world, were greedy.

And now, many years later, we are still greedy, we don't care about nothing but ourselves, and that is the first thing that we need to change to star moving the world.

I liked the video, it shows how can we open the eyes to adults by showing our opinion.

I think that it is a really surprising video, because before you watch it you think: well, it is going to be another of these boring things that we have to do. But when you are watching it, the strength and the energy that this little girl’s voice (she and her friend only have twelve or thirteen years old) has, it causes you be speechless.

She tries to open our eyes and show us how greedy we are. She reproaches them for all the daily worries that she has because of the environmental problems, like: sunbathe without thinking in the holes of the ozone, breath without thinking in the chemicals are in the air or fishing in a river without contaminate fishes. She also expresses her anger because we have all the possibilities to find a solution about the environmental problems, but we don’t do anything.

Finally, she challenges the entire environmental representative to make their actions reflect their words.

2 She says that if the summit audience isn’t the solutions to the problems of the world at least they don’t have to continue destroying the planet

She says that the richest countries, like Canada, don’t share with the poorest countries.

3 She asks the members of the summit and “grown ups” to do things as they are telling their children

E.C.O. members are children from 12 to 13 years old.

The girl says that all of them have had lots of opportunities during their whole life. They have seen some animals and plants that are currently extinguished and she reproaches them that, as a consequence of our acts, the next generations will not be able to enjoy all that. She also reproaches the summit audience in particular and the northern countries in general that they don’t share anything, that they are afraid to share their goods and possessions.

She asks the “grown ups” in general to follow the same rules that they teach to the young children since kindergarden: to respect others, not to fight, to work things out, to clean out our mess, not to hurt other criatures, to share and not be greedy… She asks them to make their actions reflect their words, because “we are what we do, no what we say”.

ECO members are a group of twelve and thirteen years olds.

She reproachs that we make so much waste and we just buy and throw away. For example, nothern countries are not willing to share with others countries although they have more than enough.
She wonders why people that have everything they want, are still so greedy.
Since we were children we are taught how to behave in the world: to share, not to fight, not to be greedy...and now why are adults behaving in such a different way, a way completely opposite to what we've learned since we were little children?
Consequently, she thinks we should change our ways because we're all in this together and we should act as one single world now more tan ever before.

They are twelve to thirteen years old.
2. What does Severn reproach the summit audience in particular and the northern countries in general?
She said to the audience that they all are fathers, mothers, uncles, etc. so they have to be worried about the future of his child.
Also she says that in northern countries the people make so much waste, the buy and throw away, and at the same time in countries like Basil, a lot of children can’t eat because they are very poor.
3
She asks to the member not to be hypocrites. She said that society teach at the schools not to fight, to respect the others, etc. but if the society fight, don’t respect the others, etc. it don’t make any sense to teach all of this good things to the children.

Suzuki is reproaching the adults for destroying the world's enviroment too quickly, without knowing how to repair the damage. She wonders if her future will be as the ones that the past generations had, or if in 20 years the world will be too changed to be recognizable.
In order to end or reduce the world's autodestruction, all countries should share and cooperate together, should put away social and political differences so as to fix our errors.

I'm completely agree with Severn Suzuki, we are in this world to keep it, not to destroy it. All the things she says are really true, but the most incredible is the way she tells things and the confidence she has just with thirteen years old, as her colleages of E.C.O. organization, who have twelve and thirteen.

All she begs for is that the summit audience do his best on the environment issues; and blame people not to share. She says that we only buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and that we have more things that what we need.
In addition, she reproaches the summit audience, business people, politicians in particular and the northern countries in general that they must make their actions to improve the environment and the world, and not to spend so much money in wars, spent it on finding environmental answers, in poverty,...we are what we do, not what we say.

Moreover, she asks the members of the summit to “grown ups”: they must do the things that they teach to children in schools, not the things that they are not going to do. And also if they don't know how to fix it, they don't destroy it.

This video does that we find about the little that we worry for the environment and the poverty.

She critices that the adults don't act like what they say. They teach us that we treat well the environment and we try to help the poor people but they don't to do anything for to change the world situation.

She also says that northern countries, like Canada that they have a lot of things, doesn't to help the countries that have a lot of needs.

In conclusion, nowadays we destroy our planet and there is an important imbalance between countries.

3.She asks to the members of summit and “grown ups” to do all the things that they explain to their children. For example if the parents explain to their children that to fight is bad, but the children can see that all the society are fighting, this educations is not necessary.

It's important that in our world there will be more people like this girl.
People who are not afraid to get out in front of so many people and tell the truth.
Some times, young people see the world better than old people and is important to us that this young generation will begin to denounce everything that happens in the world. May be, we can change the situation if everyone involved.

I like this vidio. I like this kind of people
